North America is the larger of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. The United States of America is located in the middle of the North American continent. The 48 states of the conterminous United States lie between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans and shares borders with only two other countries -- Canada and Mexico. Alaska (the 49th state) lies west of Canada, and Hawaii (the 50th state) lies in the Pacific Ocean about 2,100 miles southwest of California.
