Dogecoin, the meme-based cryptocurrency that has no apparent utility outside being the central figure in a long-running and very popular meme, has been mentioned more on Twitter over the past 24 hours than any other cryptocurrency. But that’s not all – that volume of mentions was actually the most mentions for any cryptocurrency EVER on Twitter. That includes Bitcoin and Ether, the two largest crypto tokens by market capitalization.
A favorite of Elon Musk, who makes veiled references to Doge and other cryptocurrencies (he recently was likely responsible for a big run up in Bitcoin), remains on board, though what that actually means in terms of ownership of dogecoin is unclear.
In all the excitement on social media, the token hasn’t faired too poorly in the price column, having increased dramatically to as much as $.078 per coin on Coinbase yesterday. 24 volume for the token was also through the roof, with only Bitcoin, Ether, and some stable coins outpacing it.
