The next morning, when I finally got up, I knew I looked horrible. My hair refused to fall in place, I looked tired, and I was nervous about how Oliver would react to the news.
I walked to his house after leaving a note for my parents telling them to call me if they needed anything.
When I got there, Alex opened the door. “What are you doing here?” He asked, running a hand through his hair, reminding me of when Duncan had broken up with me.
Flashback
I had just found out we were moving. I had told all my friends, and now I needed to tell my boyfriend. Duncan. The hottest guy in school.
When I got to his house, he opened the door and asked, “What are you doing here?”
“I just needed to tell you that I’m moving.” I replied, sad.
“Oh.” He finally said, running a hand through his hair. That was one of his most annoying habits – he constantly ran a hand through his hair, and sometimes it was distracting and annoying.
“That’s all you have to say?” I asked.
“I’ll miss you?” He asked.
“What are we going to do?” I asked.
“I think we should break up. See other people.” He stated bluntly.
I nodded. “Yeah. Just next time, I won’t pick a douche bag like you.”
End Flashback
“I need to talk to Oliver.” I told Alex.
He invited me in, and led me to the kitchen, where Oliver was eating a bowl of cereal.
“She came looking for you.” Alex explained.
“Hey.” Oliver smiled at me.
I smiled back. “I need to talk to you. After you’re done eating, of course.”
He finished eating and we went up to his room. “I haven’t been completely honest with you.” I started.
He turned, looking surprised and hurt. Before he could say anything, I went on.
“I’m not Carrie’s friend. I’m her younger sister.” I continued, waiting for his reaction.
He looked at me. “Are you serious?”
I nodded, not knowing what to say.
“Now I know who you reminded me of. Your laugh, your smile, it all makes sense. God, I’m pathetic. I never really got over Carrie, did I?” He asked, bitterly.
“You’re not pathetic.” I said.
“I’m sorry I lied.” I apologized.
“What else did you lie about? Do you even have feelings for me? You know what, it doesn’t matter. Maybe we should just let it go. This. Us. Who knows? Maybe I was just trying to replace Carrie with you.” He replied.
I had heard enough. “I didn’t lie about anything else. I do have feelings for you. I really like you and that’s why I told you the truth. But I’ll leave if that’s what you want.” I said.
“The door’s right there.” He pointed.
Holding back tears, I walked away. I knew I shouldn’t have fallen so hard. Hadn’t Duncan been a lesson? Alex stopped me.
“Hey, what happened?” He asked.
“Why do you care?” I retorted, not wanting to talk to anyone right now. I just wanted to go home and cry over losing Oliver, who I had really fallen for.
“Because you leaving like this means Oliver and you are either fighting, or over. But I know that Oliver really liked you. In fact, if he was a sappy romantic, he would have used the stronger L word. Don’t let whatever happened affect your relationship.” He answered.
“I lied to him. About being Carrie’s friend.” I said.
“You’re not her friend?” He asked, confused.
“I’m her younger sister. I know it doesn’t matter now that she’s dead, but she was pregnant with your baby.” I replied.
“How do you know?” He asked.
“Before she died, she handed me her diary. That’s how I found out about everything. The entries were all letters written to me.” I explained.
“Oh.” He finally said while running a hand through his hair, then mumbled something incoherent. I saw the resemblance between Duncan and Alex, and realized that Oliver had done the same thing with me that Carrie had done with Alex.
“Oliver never liked me. Just like Carrie never liked you. Oliver was just using me as a replacement for Carrie. There was a guy, my ex-boyfriend Duncan. He picked me over Carrie, and she swore she was over it, but the thing is, you do the same annoying thing Duncan did – the whole running a hand through your hair. You also kind of look alike, just a tiny bit. And Oliver did the same thing with Carrie and me.
I should go. Tell Oliver I’m sorry for lying.” I said, leaving.
I walked to Carrie’s grave and sat on the bench in front of it, and started crying. I just sat there and cried.
When I was done crying, I sat there, thinking about everything and nothing. I didn’t even notice Alex come and sit down next to me until he said, “Are you okay?”
“I will be.” I replied.
“I know that you have no reason to hear me out, but will you listen to what I have to say?” He asked.
I shrugged. “I’m not going anywhere.”
“When I met Carrie, she was different than any of the other girls I had been with. She was smarter, and didn’t act a certain way to get anyone’s attention. I liked her because of that. I didn’t want it to be the way all my other relationships were. Then, when she thought Hillary was competition, she changed completely. She became just another girl that wanted me to themselves. I know I’m not blameless, considering on how I can’t commit, but my interest in her faded after she changed. The thing is, if she had been with Oliver, she would have been happy. He was so in love with her, and when she picked me, his heart was broken. I don’t know what happened between you and Oliver, but I do know that you’re the first girl he’s had an interest in since Carrie. So just don’t make any quick decisions about anything.” He said.
“Why are you so determined to explain or whatever for your brother? He made it clear that he never wants to see me again.” I asked.
“Because I messed up. By acting casual around Carrie while knowing he was falling harder and harder for her by the day and then her picking me and us becoming a thing, it messed up everything. I don’t think Oliver can trust me, even today. So I’ll take any chance I can to fix things.” He answered.
“That’s nice, but it’s done. I’m sorry that I can’t help you fix it, but I wasn’t even able to fix things between me and Carrie after Duncan.” I said, getting up, ready to leave.
“She forgave you. For all of it. She told me. About you.” He said. I turned and sat back down.
“That’s funny, because Hillary, Violet, and Oliver had no idea that I even existed.” I said.
He shrugged. “We talked. On some level, we connected. We opened up to each other, and I liked what we had, though it scared me. It was good until she changed into the girl she thought I wanted, but I actually loved the way she was. She never mentioned Duncan, though, although she did call me Dalex once.”
I laughed. “Dalex?”
“Duncan and Alex, I’m guessing.” Alex replied.
We spent more time talking about everything and nothing, and it was nice. Definitely not heart-stopping, butterflies in your stomach, just nice.
“From what everyone acts like, it seems like you’re a douche. But you’re honestly not.” I commented.
“Everyone has their flaws. I have mine. I hate commitment, so usually I just date around. Hillary acts like she owns me, so you know, it kind of makes people think I’m the bad guy.” He replied, looking at Carrie’s tombstone.
“What’s with Hillary anyways?” I asked.
“We grew up together. She was a good friend. Then, one day, we were driving along this road going nowhere, when we stopped. We talked about what we wanted, and then from there it went all the way. Hillary was convinced and still is that we belong together. But it’s never going to be that way. Honestly, I don’t even know her anymore.” He answered. “It’s like after Carrie left the group, it split into Hillary, Violet, Oliver and then there’s me.”
“Well, Hillary is one manipulative bitch. I wouldn’t take it too hard.” I replied.
He laughed. “Barbie.” He said, snickering.
“Douche.” I retorted jokingly.
“Blonde.” He replied.
“Hey. Unfair. I ran out of words.” I said.
“You need to expand your vocabulary.” He replied.
“Shut up. My vocabulary is immense enough.” I said.
“Immense? Is that supposed to impress me?” He asked, raising an eyebrow.
“No, but if you keep bugging me, I’ll hurt you. I am a black belt, you know?” I asked.
“Ah yes. Hillary and her nose. You should’ve broken it. I would’ve loved to see her with her nose all bandaged up and cosmetically repaired.” Alex replied.
“Wasn’t worth the lawsuit.” I said.
“Good point.” He noted.
“What are you going to do now? With your life, I mean?” I asked.
“Well, talking with Carrie made me start thinking. She was so determined, and set on what she wanted. I’m taking some classes at the local college, and maybe I’ll transfer to a better university next year or something.” He said.
“My friends and I used to call her Conservative Carrie because the way she acted.” I said.
He snickered. “Conservative Carrie?”
I punched his arm lightly. “Watch it.” I warned.
We spent the rest of the day talking and laughing, and even though I was upset over Oliver, I knew I had a friend in Alex. He was like the older brother I never had.
Sorry for the extremely long wait! Okay, so here’s a quick summary of what’s coming (don’t worry we’re not giving anything big away :D)
Basically, now that Ashleigh and Oliver are over and she and Alex are friends, extreme drama with Hillary. Ashleigh makes new friends at school, and everything’s good except she can’t get over Oliver. Yet Alex is always there to comfort her. What will happen? You’ll have to read 😛
