Blackberry 8520 — Business Class with a Bonus
The cult of the Blackberry goes from strength to strength with no sign of stopping, and the 8520 is just one model from a range that is revered – almost worshiped some would say – by businessmen and women the world over. Having established itself as a market leader in the niche market that has become its own, what can the 8520 do to help Blackberry keep its place at the head of the table?
The good bits
That Blackberry sees no reason to move away from the tried and tested style that is the Curve ranges own is no bad thing, and the 8520 is a great looking phone that is immediately recognizable as a Blackberry – important for those who want to be seen to be on the ball!
The large 2.6 inch screen is almost an expectation these days, and Blackberry does it particularly well in this model in combining the large screen with the full qwerty keyboard that has become part and parcel of the look and function of these excellent phones. The useful backlight is also a welcome inclusion, great for those working late!
Full WiFi connectivity is included on the 8520 – and very effective it is, too – plus the useful keyboard lock feature that prevents you from making unwanted calls, and while Blackberry users will be familiar with the size and shape of the handsets this one is, as usual, very nice to handle and easy to get used to for those not familiar with Blackberry ways.
All of the usual tried and tested Blackberry functions are present – the excellent email capability, full messaging features, great connectivity options, document viewer and more – and there is really not much more to say other than that this is a Blackberry, something that for many is a good thing, but for others….
The bad bits
It’s a Blackberry. There is a love it or hate it element to owning a Blackberry, something akin to the Filofax in the 80’s, or the Golf Gti; a Blackberry, to many, is not just a phone, it’s a statement, and if you are not one who is desperate to be seen as part of the “in crowd” you may not wish to join the club.
This is somewhat unfair, however, for we are here to talk about the phone itself, and the 8520 is a very good phone indeed. Blackberry is rightfully regarded as a top quality brand and this handset is just that, but the over-sized style, the chunky presence of the keyboard, the less than impressive camera facilities and the lack of available apps in comparison with the mighty iPhone and others are all points that people will find hard to overcome.
Conclusion There are two ways to look at the 8520; if you want a Blackberry, a business use phone of the very highest order, here you have one with good battery life, excellent facilities and everything that a Blackberry can offer, and at some impressive tariff costs, too.
