CVT Transmission Problems

What are CVT transmission problems? Here’s some information on problems related to CVT transmission.

What is a CVT transmission? A CVT, or continuously variable transmission, is a type of automatic transmission that can be found in cars made by automakers such as Audi, Nissan, Ford, Honda and GM. In case of car with CVT, a pulley and belt system is incorporated in order to provide an unlimited range of gear ratios unlike the automatic transmission which has a set number of gear ratios. Though it has been advertised for advantages such as fuel economy, but people driving the cars with a CVT have experienced certain CVT transmission problems. Let’s find out how a CVT works and the problems with CVT transmission.

CVT Mechanism Facing car transmission problems

? Are these related to CVT transmission? Before we move on to the car problems associated with CVT, let’s find out how CVT differs from the traditional transmissions. In the traditional transmission, only a set number of ratios are provided by the gear set. When you drive, you shift gears to get the ratio which is apt for driving in a particular situation. While you use lowest gears for starting up, for accelerating you need to shift to the middle gears and for the fuel-efficient driving, you have to turn to the highest gears. In case of CVTs, a pulley and belt system is used to facilitate gear ratios. This system comprises of a pair of variable-diameter pulleys, the input pulley is the one connected to the engine and the output pulley is connected to the drive wheels. A metal belt runs between the two pulleys. The pulley halves can move and when they come in proximity of each other, the metal belt or chain goes higher on the pulley, which in turn increases the diameter of the pulley. In a CVT, it is the change in the diameter of the pulley that brings about the varied transmission ratios. For a low ratio, the input pulley has to be smaller and the output pulley larger. Thus, the change in the diameter of pulleys plays a role in changing the relationship of engine speed to car speed. Thus, the ratio is continuously being changed unlike the traditional transmission where the ratio is changed in stages by shifting gears.

CVT Transmission Problems The CVT mechanism has its advantages and disadvantages. While its strong points are better acceleration and enhanced fuel economy than the automatic transmission, but people have faced certain CVT transmission problems also. Some people have voiced their concern regarding this mechanism. Those using cars with conventional transmission, might be aware of the automatic transmission problems

, but on switching to a car with CVT, they might find it difficult to adjust to CVT. The cars with CVT produce some noise when you try to accelerate. The car noise is produced as a result of CVT trying to adjust the engine speed. Though CVT mechanism is such that it facilitates the engine to rev at any speed, but the sound might seem like that of a slipping clutch. Those who are accustomed to driving cars with automatic transmission might find that slightly bothersome. Since, it provides a smooth transition while accessing maximum power, it leaves an impression of the car being slowed down. You need to adjust to the dynamics. Another CVT transmission problem is the inability to check the fluid level on your own. You need to get it checked by the dealer. It is more expensive than the conventional transmission, that certainly affects the user acceptance in an adverse manner. Most of the CVT transmission problems can be associated with the fact that the users might take time to adjust. Due to this fact, the automakers are trying to incorporate features that make it similar to a conventional transmission. There are different types of CVTs, some offer a “manual” mode and other features that create a resemblance to the conventional transmissions. In case, you are planning to buy a vehicle with a CVT transmission, make sure you go for a test drive to check your comfort level. Long-term reliability is one aspect that needs to be looked into.

So, this was some information regarding CVT transmission problems. If you are planning to buy a car with CVT, you must go for a test drive first. Though, it does offer superior fuel economy and better acceleration, but you must make a choice after going for a test drive.
