A Pre-Teen’s Paradise

As soon as your daughter reaches her pre-teens stage, her attention will be greatly caught by fashionable stuff. Be it clothing, shoes, and even the things inside her bedroom will start to matter to her. Give her that paradise inside your home with the simple bedroom decorating guide below…

As pre-teen girls begin to approach their teenage years, fashion and design begin to become quite the interest in their lives – and it carries far past just what they wear. Even if they have never expressed interest in it before, at some point how their bedroom looks will become important to them. For the pre-teen and teenage crowd, the bedroom is often one of the top places to hang out with their friends.

To create a bedroom space that your teen will love to be in, begin by surveying the furniture in the room. Teenagers often want to have a friend or two spend the night; do you have some additional sleeping space in the room? Is there seating in the room for when your daughter and her friends want to talk in her bedroom for hours? If your answer to both of these questions is no, consider adding a futon that could serve a dual-purpose as both seating during the day and extra bed space at night. These days, it is easy to find a futon that is large enough to accommodate two teenage girls without breaking the bank. Check with local furniture stores and make sure you do some price comparisons online during your search.

Since your teen and her friends will be spending quite a bit of time in the bedroom, focus on making sure that the room is as comfortable as possible. Choose bedding that fits your teenager’s tastes while still being able to be easily washable. In addition, add curtains or valances that coordinate with or at least complement the other patterns in the room.

A couple of area rugs thrown casually on the floor are great for teens to sit around while playing board games. There are plenty of options available to match any kind of decor. While floral rugs and pink rugs are perfect for teens who go ga-ga over everything girly, a contemporary rug would be more appropriate for someone who likes to think of herself as “all grown up”.

An important part of any teenager’s bedroom is the entertainment factor. Consider placing a television with an attached DVD player in their room to make it easier for them to watch shows and movies with their friends. If you are concerned about what channels they may watch, consult the help guide with your local service provider to use parental controls to block certain channels or shows. Also, to keep the entertainment level high, consider adding a game system that your teen and her friends can enjoy.

Decorating your pre-teen or teenager’s bedroom can go far past simple decorations; use the time spent selecting décor and arranging the room as quality time with your daughter. Instead of selecting things for the room on your own or sending her to select the items herself, go together and make a day out of it complete with a mother and daughter lunch together. While you may not want to give your daughter full prerogative to decide what goes in her room, allow her to have some say in the décor. While it is likely that your décor ideas may not be the same as what your daughter had in mind, you can probably arrive at a medium that both of you can agree on. Above all, have fun together!
