Spray, or something else? How to tell which product this job needs

Before you buy anything, do the screwdriver test. Press an awl, a screwdriver tip, or even a car key firmly into the suspect area. Solid wood resists it. Rot-softened wood gives way, sometimes with almost no pressure at all.

Here’s roughly how that plays out:

  • Firm, maybe discolored, no give when probed: a spray is the right tool. You’re arresting the fungus before it does more damage. The wood that’s already lost stays lost.
  • Slightly spongy, small area, wood still there: you’re in filler or epoxy territory. How do you use a wood rot treatment spray correctly?

Let it dry fully before you paint, stain, or seal over it. Rushing this part is the fastest way to undo everything you just did. What should you check on the label before you buy one?

Not all wood rot treatment sprays are interchangeable, and the label tells you more than the marketing copy on the front of the bottle does.

  • Labeled use: exterior vs. interior. A product rated for exterior use is formulated to hold up against rain and UV; using an interior-only product outside will get you a shorter effective life than you’re expecting.
  • Ground contact vs. above-grade rating. Wood sitting on or near soil faces constant moisture exposure and needs a treatment rated for ground contact. Above-grade wood, like fascia or window trim, has different exposure and can often use a lighter-duty product.
  • Active ingredient. Borate or copper, as covered above, changes where and how the product performs.

Treat it the way you’d treat any pesticide product, because that’s functionally what it is.

Wear nitrile gloves while handling and applying it, and if you’re working in an enclosed space like a crawl space or a closed room, use a respirator rated for solvent or organic vapor fumes rather than a basic dust mask, which does nothing against fumes. Open windows or run a fan for cross-ventilation whenever you’re spraying indoors or in a semi-enclosed area like a garage.

Keep kids and pets out of the treated area while it’s wet and until it’s fully dry. Don’t guess at how long that takes.
